Garrard Tunnel to Close for Trail Construction
June 2, 2005

FERRY POINT TUNNEL WILL BE CLOSED TO MOTOR VEHICLE TRAFFIC BUT OPEN FOR PEDESTRIANS AND BICYCLISTS JUNE 6 TO LATE JULY

Construction will begin about June 6 inside Ferry Point Tunnel

Construction will begin about June 6 inside Ferry Point Tunnel to double the width of the narrow elevated sidewalk and improve illumination. New lighting will be installed on the tunnel wall above the pedestrian and bicyclist pathway, and carbon black will be omitted so that the concrete pavement will be white, rather than gray. Potholes in the road will be repaired, and the roadway will be restriped while satisfying Caltrans standards for vehicle lane width and vertical clearance. The tunnel will be closed to motor vehicle traffic 24/7; however, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles will be allowed to pass through. A corridor for pedestrians and bicyclists will be maintained on the eastern side of the tunnel. Detour signs will be posted for motor vehicles, which may continue to use Seacliff and Western Drives. Temporary closure is needed to expedite construction. This project is funded by a Bay Trail grant from the Association of Bay Area Governments and California Coastal Conservancy. The funds will revert to the State Treasury if the project is not completed and billed before the end of July.
