  COP27 and Climate Mayors
November 8, 2022

Although I couldn’t be there, as a Climate Mayors member, I am following the event with interest and renewed optimism. Mayors’ leadership at the local level will establish a pathway for agreements and funding to be transformed into results at this year’s #COP27

  • #COP27 is all about building on the momentum of COP26 by turning promises into action. Coordination between city decisionmakers, regional officials, and national governments will be key in meeting the needs of our cities and communities in the face of the climate crisis.
  • Climate change threatens the livelihoods, health, and safety of people around the world. #COP27 is a vital opportunity for creating change and protecting our communities.
  • Cities account for over 70% of global emissions, making emissions reductions in urban areas critical to meet climate targets. Mayors and local governments have a unique opportunity to create lasting change when our concerns and challenges are heard at #COP27.

What is COP27 and why is it important? - BBC News

  • At COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, government officials at all levels will join together to work toward achieving the world’s climate goals set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement.
  • COP27 is dedicated to keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees as outlined in the Paris Agreement, and Climate Mayors will ensure that cities play their role in reaching this imperative target.
  • COP27 is all about building on the momentum of COP26 by turning promises into action.
  • When it comes to climate change, livelihoods, health, and safety are at stake for communities around the world, which is why COPs are such vital moments for creating change.
  • Climate Mayors’ participation at COP27 will ensure the consideration of comprehensive agreements that will have a meaningful impact on localities and on the world at large.
  • Climate change is a global issue and it’s imperative that we work together. The presence of international governments in Egypt is symbolic of global commitment, but we must ensure words are met with action.
  • On the heels of the U.S. passing the historic Inflation Reduction Act, Climate Mayors will keep the momentum going at COP27 to supercharge local and global climate commitments toward net-zero emissions. Climate Mayors’ leadership on the local level will establish a pathway for agreements and funding to be transformed into results.

COP27 AND CITIES

  • Cities account for over 70% of global emissions, making emissions reductions in urban areas critical to meet climate targets. Climate Mayors will ensure cities are accurately represented at COP27.
  • Coordination between city decisionmakers, regional officials, and national governments will be key in meeting the needs of cities, nations and countries in the face of the climate crisis.
  • Mayors have been leading the fight against climate change within frontline communities. Climate Mayors will continue to carry this torch at COP27 and provide leadership for cities on the global stage.
  • COP27 is a global arena, but Climate Mayors will be diligent in keeping local communities integrated in the discussions of climate justice, clean energy, adaptation and more.
  • Environmental justice lies at the heart of addressing the climate crisis. A just energy transition is only possible when we listen to those who have been historically marginalized and uplift their voices during global discussions such as COP27.
  • At COP27, Climate Mayors will convene with local officials from around the globe and learn from the stories, successes and challenges of their cities to bring innovative solutions to the homefront.
