Celebrating 50 Years of Friendship
What: In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Shimada, Japan and Richmond, California, a delegation of city officials, performers and visitors will travel to Richmond to participate in the Golden Rose Festival. There will be Taiko drumming, swordsmanship, a calligraphy demonstration, Japanese floral arrangement workshop, a tea ceremony, Soran Bushi and Jamisen performances. Special guests Ray Obiedo and Mistura Fina will grace the Richmond Auditorium with an enticing jazz flavor that will conclude the historical celebration with an atmosphere filled with contagious rhythms, dancing and unity.
Why: The City of Richmond and Shimada, Japan have shared a sister city relationship for 50 years. This is one of the oldest sister city relationships in the United States. Shimada would like to bring a taste of Shimada to Richmond and invite the community to share in the cultural experience of both cities.
When: Saturday, April 28, 2012
Time: 2:00pm to 6:00pm – Tickets will be sold at the door for $10

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Richmond-Shimada Sister City Friendship, the Richmond City Council would like to invite city staff and members of the public to the Richmond Shimada Golden Rose Festival on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 2pm to 6pm at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium.  Shimada Officials will lead a delegation of 60 people from Japan to participate in the festival.  Performers from Japan will play taiko drums along with a local taiko troupe from the Bay Area. Our own East Bay Center for the Performing Arts will present cultural performances that reflect Richmond’s diverse community.  We will have a live performance from jazz composer and guitarist Ray Obiedo. Please come out and enjoy an afternoon of cultural entertainment, food, exhibits and more.

Tickets are available for $10 per person at the Recreation Complex.  Please phone 620-6793 for information regarding ticket sales.
