THE SIMPLE ACT of voting online could give a major boost to efforts by residents of North Richmond and East Richmond to bring a wedge-shaped property back into use as a revitalized neighborhood park.
Work by the community has already made a difference at Solano Playlot, a long-neglected park at 38th Street and Solano Avenue. Neighborhood children are using the park again and adults are holding cleanup/maintenance/planting days and hosting events.
Efforts include entering a contest sponsored by Parenting Magazine and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization "dedicated to saving play for America's children." The top prize in the contest is movable play equipment valued at $23,000 for the park that finishes first in online voting.
With the Aug. 20 ballot deadline looming, Solano Playlot is third in voting. You can show your support for the park by going to playspacefinder.kaboom.org/playspaces/95013-solano-playlot, registering and becoming a fan.
Regular work days this month are set for Fridays starting at 9 a.m., when volunteers will remove garbage and cover graffiti to keep the park inviting for children.
