Urgent Oil Spill Information for Point Richmond

The following was received from Chris Spencer, Vice-President, Point Richmond neighborhood Council:

As most of you are already aware, Wednesday morning we had a major oil spill on the Bay when a container ship struck the Oakland Bay Bridge.  This is having a drastic impact on our shoreline here in Point Richmond.  As of this morning (11/09) several government agencies including Contra Costa Health Services has closed Keller Beach in Miller-Knox Park, and the Western Drive Mini Park which has beach access.

Several Point residents today have discovered birds that were covered with oil.  If you should happen across any oiled or injured wildlife, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WASH, FEED OR HOUSE THESE ANIMALS!   The use of protective clothing MUST be worn and environmental protocols MUST be followed to insure the safety of the public AND the animals.

PLEASE CONTACT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PHONE NUMBERS IF YOU HAVE ANY WILDLIFE THAT HAS BEEN OILED OR INJURED:

  • WILDLIFE HOT LINE: 877-823-6926 (THIS NUMBER IS OVER LOADED & MAY TAKE SEVERAL TRIES TO GET THROUGH)
  • INTERNATIONAL BIRD RESCUE RESEARCH CENTER (IBRRC): 707-207-0380 (PRESS #5 FOR WILDLIFE EMERGENCIES)
  • WILD CARE SAN RAFAEL: 415-453-1000 (WILL TRANSPORT INJURED BIRDS TO IBRRC)

PLEASE NOTE IF YOU ARE A POINT RESIDENT WHO'S HOME IS ON THE WATER, PLEASE CONTACT THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD AT 510-772-8865. THE COAST GUARD MY NEED TO HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR YARD OR BEACH.

Many of these organizations are overwhelmed at the moment, so please keep trying if you can not get through.  The PRNC is working to see if we can either call in a team for our area or create one with the help of the various organizations that are trained to do this.  IF YOU HAVE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE IN THIS AREA, PLEASE CALL CHRIS SPENCER AT 510-235-2817, OR ROBIN CARPENTER AT 510-232-8175.  We will be attending a meeting tomorrow morning (Saturday, 11/10) to find out more about how to take care of the Point wildlife during this crisis.

PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE A CLEANUP TRAINING CLASS HELD TOMORROW FROM 1:30PM TO 3:30PM AT THE RICHMOND MARINA, HARBOR MASTERS BUILDING.1340 MARINA WAY SOUTH, RICHMOND, CA.  TELE: 510-236-1013. THIS CLASS IS BEING SPONSORED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME

PLEASE ATTEND IF YOU ARE ABLE!
