Island in the Sun

Spend a beautiful fall day this coming Saturday on an island in San Francisco Bay helping to maintain one of Richmond’s unique treasures – East Brother Lighthouse.

Maintaining a lighthouse is a never-ending task. The keepers of old were nicknamed "wickies" because of all of the time they spent trimming the wicks of the oil lamp so to keep the light strong and bright. While the old oil lamps are now history, the work of the lighthouse remains constant.

There is need for all sorts of volunteers amongst the East Brother Light Station "Wickies" of today. The tasks include everything from cleaning windows to diesel mechanics. Painting, gardening, carpentry, inventorying; whatever your skills or energy level, there's a place for you. Workdays are usually the second Saturday of the month, weather permitting.

October Wickie Workday is October 13, 2007 ( 08:45 - 16:00 ). The October Wickie workday will be on Saturday the 13th. We'll meet at the Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor just before 0900, and get back off the island by 4. Reservations are required. If all goes well, we'll be installing a new dishwasher along with the regular maintenance tasks. If you've registered as a volunteer, you'll receive the RSVP e-mail. Please make sure that you click on the link at the bottom of that e-mail so we'll know how many lunches to prepare. Questions? Call me.
