Summer Job to Work on NURVE (Nystrom Urban Revitalization Effort)

LISC (Local Initiative Support Corporation) received some funding to support a summer intern to help work on the NURVE project in Richmond. If you know of anyone who is may be qualified and interested, particularly someone who lives in Richmond and/or the Santa Fe or Coronado neighborhoods, please pass the attached position description along.

NURVE Summer Intern

The Nystrom United ReVitalization Effort (NURVE) is a community-driven planning process seeking to link improvements to the built and natural environment to programs and services that will serve to greatly improve the quality of life for residents of a challenged low-income community in the Iron Triangle of Richmond.

NURVE is an inovative partership beweeen city agencies, the school district, local nonprofit organizations, and the residents to transform the neighborhoood for the benefit of existing and new residents.

The Project Associate would work with LISC, EBCF, RCF, and a team of city agencies to assist with overall project management, program development and complete periodic research tasks.  Specific duties will include:

§  Help shape the ongoing community planning and stakeholder engagement process for the project.

§ Perform targeted outreach to neighborhood groups/institutions, individuals & merchants increasing participation and diversity in the project.

§ Help develop the summer/fall community-wide meeting, including working with the team to develop interactive meeting materials, coordinating community based organizations to conduct outreach.

§ Help plan and coordinate relevant Executive and Technical Advisory meetings.

§ Work with neighborhood-based nonprofits or community organizing groups to support a community action project or special event to promote the neighborhood and increase community pride.

§ Work with local organizations to coordinate a youth action committee.

§ Identify community leadership development needs

§  Maintain and regularly update project management documents.  Help monitor task progress and completion by team members.

§  Develop project informational materials as is needed.

§  Periodic research projects, as needed and as time permits.

Desired Qualifications

§  Background in urban planning, public policy/administration, community organizing

§  Experience with project management, group facilitation, public relations and public speaking

§  Demonstrated ability to be a leader and work as a member of a team

§  Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work activities

§  Experience working in a multi-cultural environment

§  Commitment to social justice and belief in the positive power of community engagement

§  Sophisticated communications skills (speaking, writing, phone, etc.)

§  Motivated self-starter

§  Ability to recruit and manage volunteers

§  Experience managing neighborhood “politics” a plus

§  Bilingual in Spanish/English a plus

Working conditions: The position requires 40 hours per week on a flexible basis with competitive compensation.
