Another Architect in the Family (II)
August 15, 2005

Last year, our older son Andrew, became a licensed architect (see Another Architect in the Family February 29, 2004) and subsequently became a principal at Interactive Resources. This year it is our daughter-in-law’s turn.

Kimberly (Kim) J. Butt, wife of our older son, Andrew Martin Butt, was notified on August 12, 2005, that she had passed her final test, an oral examination before the California Architects Board, to complete her eligibility to become a licensed architect in California. In order to obtain a license and legally use the title “architect,” one has to complete five years of architecture school, apprentice with a licensed architect for three years, pass nine written tests, including building design and site planning using CAD (Computer Aided Design) and finally pass an oral examination.

Like Andrew, Kim attended the University of Arkansas School of Architecture. She worked for Carey & Co., a historic preservation architecture firm in San Francisco before enrolling last year at U.C. Berkeley for a master’s degree in Architectural History, which she will complete in the spring of 2006.

Kim was recently appointed by Mayor Anderson to serve on Richmond’s Historic Preservation Advisory Committee. While working at Carey & Co., Kim was assigned to several Richmond historical preservation projects, including preparing the National Register of Historic Places nomination for Atchison Village, Historic American Building Survey documentation for the former Kaiser Field Hospital at Cutting and Marina Way, and Historic Evaluations for the Maritime and Ruth Powers Child Development Centers.
