Join the Arts and Culture Commission
October 26, 2002

The Arts and Culture Commission is a hands-on group of volunteers committed to advocating for and bringing the arts to Richmond's residents.  The Commission recently sponsored Artrain USA, a 5-day event that brought the nation's only art museum on a train to Richmond. The exhibition, "Artistry of Space," was on loan from NASA.

Richmond's volunteer steering committee partnered with  U.C. Berkeley, Lawrence Hall of Science, all of Richmond's arts organizations, businesses, city workers, its museum, and more, bringing positive attention and admiration to our city. Exhibits and hands-on activities in both the arts and science were provided. Further, our Commissioners showed how the arts can be used as a tool -- both for building community and the economy.

The Arts & Culture Commission now has four openings --available immediately.  Reflecting our community's diversity is important, so we particularly welcome Asian and Hispanic applicants at this time.  Whatever your area of expertise is, you are needed.  Architecture, engineering, landscaping, marketing or law -- all areas of representation are applicable. We would also like to see more men involved.

We also have spaces available on our Public Arts Advisory Committee, which works with the Commission to implement the City's 1 1/2 percent for arts ordinance.

Please contact Virginia Rigney, Manager of the Arts and Culture Division for applications and more information: (510) 620-6797.
